Amazon Sets Oct. 1 Start for Employee Grocery Discounts of 10% Online, 20% In Store

The benefit starts on an employee’s first day across U.S. fulfillment, grocery and corporate roles. A separately announced $20 starting wage applies to a narrower group.

Amazon says its U.S. employee grocery discount begins October 1, 2026. Employees in fulfillment centers, Whole Foods Market stores and corporate offices are among those eligible from their first day. The published terms offer two rates: 10% on eligible online purchases and 20% on eligible purchases in Whole Foods Market and Daily Shop stores.

That difference matters to employees deciding where to shop. The 10% rate applies to eligible items sold and shipped by Amazon on Amazon.com and eligible Whole Foods online orders. The 20% in-store rate excludes alcohol and gift cards. Amazon says there is no minimum purchase or cap on savings, and employees must use their Amazon account for purchases under the offer.

For Whole Foods team members, the 20% in-store percentage itself is not new: they already had a 20% team-member discount. The October 1 rollout establishes the stated online and in-store grocery offer across Amazon’s U.S. employee groups.

The pay increase has different eligibility

Amazon’s September 16 announcement also says eligible U.S. core-operations employees receive a $1-per-hour increase. The new $20 hourly minimum starting wage applies specifically to full-time core-operations roles, rather than everyone eligible for the grocery discount.

For those roles, Amazon reports average wages of nearly $24 an hour and average total compensation of more than $32 an hour when it assigns a value to benefits. Those averages are distinct from the $20 starting minimum and do not describe a guaranteed individual wage. October 1 is the specified start date for the grocery discount; the release does not give a precise effective date for the wage increase.
